2011 LAMBING SEASON

RAMS

EWES

Nickname: Titan
Name:  TCE AI RAM O1P 606X

Sex: Ram

DOB:  19 April 2010

Single (AI)

Titan took First Place Ram Lamb, and Reserve Champion Ram, at the National Icelandic Sheep Show in October 2010.  We were fortunate to purchase him from The Creek’s Edge.

Titan is white, and definitely carries spotting.  His wool is so white, though, that we suspect he is spotted.  Based on the lambs he produced, his other pattern is solid.  His color is black.

Titan is long-bodied and well built.  He is fast-growing (125 pounds at 5 months old), and just an all-around nice guy.

Titan’s sire is Iceland ram Partur, and his dam has Askur in her pedigree.

Sex: Ewe

DOB:  25 April 2009

Lamb record: nb, 2

Dale is a black grey spotted ewe out of Panda, one of our foundation ewes, and Bud.

Dale’s fleece is positively gorgeous, really striking in its lock and luster.

Dale earned high praise from the judge at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival, not only for her fleece but for her powerful build.

Dale could produce white, grey, badgerface, or grey-badgerface, probably spotted, lambs by Titan.  Wowza!

Dale's pedigree includes Iceland rams Hnykill and Mori, as well as contributions by Dalur, Askur, Hunn, and Eir.

Leeh is a paternal half-sibling to rams Moose and Bud.  She is a beautiful black mouflon with a dense fleece and striking build. Her fleece has become "grouflon" with a lovely silvery hue.

Leeh has grown into calm, tractable ewe and proved herself an excellent mother to twins last year.  Her ram lamb has gone on to be a breeder in another flock, and we are happy to retain her ewe lamb for our own breeding program.  Leeh is absolutely fabulous!

Her pedigree includes Iceland rams Austri, Mori, and Eir.

Lambing record: nb, nb, 1

Georgia is the offspring of the largest ewe and largest ram we have had in our flock.  She has followed in their footsteps for size.  She is long-bodied and produces a gorgeous white fleece despite showing spots on her skin.

Georgia’s extensive spotting makes is hard to be certain of her pattern, but it is almost surely grey.  Her facial markings are typical of our Beast line.

Georgia is being bred for the first time as a 2-year-old because we forgot to put her in a breeding pen last year.  Still kicking myself for missing out on those lambs!

Her pedigree includes Flekkur, Skreppur, and Vestri (a Hnykill son).

Mary is a sweet-natured black solid ewe from the dairy flock at Dancing Lamb Farm.  We love, love, love our Dancing Lamb sheep – consistently standouts not only in dairy capacity but fleece and mothering – and we didn’t hesitate to pick up the very last of their polled ewes (ever!  They are keeping only horned Icelandics now.)

Mary and Titan are going to make some fine, fine lambs together.  Can’t wait to see them!

Bud has been a striking ram right from the start, and very spirited like his mother, Puddle.  We were so pleased he inherited his mom's grey pattern, and her spotting.

Bud is a Navaho grandson, with a fleece every bit as nice as his grandsire’s. He also has the meatiest build!  We are willing to overlook his scurs in favor of his long body and delicious dense fleece.

Bud's pedigree includes Iceland rams Dalur, Askur, Hunn, Mori, and Eir.

Luck joins us from Tongue River Farm.  She is a long-bodied, large ewe with heavy bone.  Her calm nature and wisdom contribute nicely to the flock social structure.

Luck produced handsome twin rams by BJ on April 5, 2010, which prove BJ carries spotting.  Luck is a wonderful mother, and her lambs grew out well.  We are looking forward to the spotted lambs that will be produced by this cross, and are keeping our fingers crossed that Luck produces a ewe lamb to carry on her legacy.  This will be Luck's 10th lambing!

Lando comes to us from Bridosha Farm, out of their fine, dense woolled Chloe by Gunner, a ram from our breeding program (Panda x Brett).  He is moorit and displays both badgerface and mouflon patterns.  He carries spotting from his sire.

Lando's dam raised good-sized twins on half an udder, so we know she produces abundant milk in addition to a wonderful fleece.  We are excited to have him contribute those genetics to our flock!

Lando’s pedigree includes Iceland ram Hnykill.

Jori is a triplet sister to Bud, one of the rams in our breeding pen.  Their dam is Puddle, making them Navaho grandkids, and their sire is TCE 342T.  Jori has the solid pattern, and carries both moorit and spotting.

Jori was the last to lamb in 2010, but produced an excellent, chunky, personality-plus, amazing-fleece ram lamb that will likely earn a spot in the breeding pen next year.

Jori will produce either badgerface or mouflon lambs by Lando, and they could be moorit.  Maybe spots, too?

Holland was not bred as a ewe lamb.  We are really looking forward to her lambs by Lando: we know they will be moorit, will be either mouflon or badgerface, and could be spotted.

Nance is a daughter of Puddle, which makes her a half-sister to Bud and Jori.  Her sire, Wolfie, went through two fences to get this breeding accomplished.  Both Puddle and Wolfie offer great fleece and maternal instincts.  Puddle adds tremendous milkiness, too.

Nance's abundant fleece is apparent in this mid-winter photo.  She's going to be a great mom as well as a great fiber producer.

Moose is the largest of Lofty's humongous triplets.  He is black solid, probably carries moorit, and definitely carries spotting.  A half-brother to Bud, above, Moose is bulky and fast-growing.  His fleece retained its good inky blackness, without fading at the tips.

Moose also has a wonderful personality - he quickly learned to cooperate on a leash and is appropriately friendly.

Nickname: Berniece
Name:  VOL EWE BERNIECE B2SP 12U

Sex: Ewe

DOB:  25 April 2008

Single to a one-winter

Lamb record: nb, 2, 2

Berniece is another of those heavily-spotted, mystery-pattern Beast descendants.  We now know that she is badgerface AND grey, having produced a lamb of each pattern in 2010.

Berniece's 2010 lambs grew really well.  We are inclined to keep her moorit grey daughter in the flock.  Her badgerface ram lamb went to a fiber pet home.

Berniece is the last Navaho daughter ever, so she is staying in the flock to contribute those fleece and dairy genetics.  She is also nicely built and an easy keeper.

Berniece's pedigree includes Iceland rams Vestri and Dalur.

Roni is such a cutie!  She was the smallest of the 2008 lambs at weaning, but she has caught up with the others.  Her fleece has washed out to a streaky near-black.

Roni had twin ram lambs by BJ in 2010.  We could not ask for a better first-time mom!  She was attentive without being overprotective, and her lambs grew well.  We retained one for our own breeding pen, and the other went to another farm as a leased breeding ram.

Junior got her name because she looks so much like her mom. Junior is a Brett daughter, and it shows in her nice wide back end.

Junior, like her dam and her cousin Georgia, has the grey pattern. Her spotting makes it so hard to know for sure!  But she proved she is grey by producing a grey lamb (along with a solid lamb) by a solid ram.  She is a really terrific mom with a nice udder.

Junior boasts Iceland ram Vestri in her pedigree, along with smidges of Dalur and Heli.

Isbell is on the small side, but very stylish.  She will be an alert mom, and will pass on great things to her lambs.

Sex:

DOB: 20 April 2010

Frog is a moorit solid ram with small scurs.  He gets a pass on the scurs for several reasons.  For one, his dam, Ginger, who was with us less than a year before dying of bloat, was a sweetheart who stole my heart and produced an amazing amount of milk (a trait we especially hope Frog passes to his lambs).  For another, Frog's fleece is very dense with a rich red-brown color.  Plus, Frog is just nicely put together, with a broad back.

Frog has some of Iceland ram Dalur in his pedigree, as well as a bit of Sonar, Hnykill, and Buri.

Topaz comes to us from the flock of Barb Webb, first in the US to own Icelandic sheep.  Topaz is fast becoming a treasure in our flock, just as she was in Barb's.

Topaz has a very dense fleece, and because she is homozygous for the grey pattern (ie. has two pattern genes for grey, which co-express) her coloration is very interesting.

Topaz's lambs by Frog will be moorit grey, so if that's what you're looking for, reserve one!

Sex: Ewe

DOB:  16 April 2010

Lamb record: 0

Billie has spunk to spare.  She was born during the night, and somehow got her head stuck on a lambing jug panel.  If a skunk hadn't delayed the midnight barn check, she might not have been found until morning, and would have surely been dead.  But she was found, cold and damp and so nearly dead we held out little hope.  Her heart was beating, but she needed a couple puffs of air into her lungs to get her breathing again.  We got some warm colostrum into her and settled her onto a heating pad with her mom, Leeh, and her brother (who has gone on to a breeding career at another farm).  Within an hour she was trying to get up and nurse, and within a day you would have never guessed she had been mere minutes from death at mere minutes old!  Billie has a very strong spirit, and it shows.

Billie is a daughter of Leeh and BJ.  Her pedigree includes Iceland rams Mori, Vestri, and Glaer, plus a bit of Austri and a sprinkle of Eir and Hunn.

Blair has a lot of phaeomelanin that fancies up her mouflon pattern.  As a lamb, she looked almost brown instead of black.  She carries spotting, so this cross with Jerry could easily produce spotted lambs.

Artie was the last lamb born in 2010, but worth the wait.  He has what might be the softest lamb fleece I have ever felt, and he has been square and blocky with a "Here I AM!" personality from day one.  Even though he was a month younger than almost all the other lambs, he was determined to keep up right from the start.  And he did!  He was running and playing with the other lambs instead of nursing, and so is a little smaller than we'd like for his age.  We expect him to make up for lost time this summer.
